Couch to 5km running

Couch to 5km running

I took up running in my forties. I was a late starter. To be honest, I’d never really liked running at all and I had no idea where to start. I just wanted to get a little bit fitter.

A work colleague gave me the encouragement I needed. She was mad keen about running. She talked about it all day! She introduced me to something called Couch to 5km (C25K). As melodramatic as it sounds, it changed my life!

You can download C25K from the app store, straight onto your phone. Make sure you get a free app to start with – it’s all you will need.

The program assumes you have no running experience at all and over an 8 – 10 week period takes you from “couch potato” to a 5km runner. It tells you when to walk and when to run, gradually increasing the running component each week.

When I started C25K I wanted to run 3km without stopping. I managed a lot more than that, but one of my most memorable achievements was the day I ran with my kids up to the top of a lookout. I never could have done that before I started running.

The Great Kanku-Breakaways event is just under six weeks away. That’s too soon to complete the whole C25K program, but enough time to make a difference to your general fitness.

If you’d love to give our event a go, C25K is a great little training tool that will help you get across the finish line a little more easily.
