Things to do

Visitors to Coober Pedy can find information about things to see and do on the Coober Pedy website.

Sample itinerary

Why not turn your visit into a short holiday?

Friday: Arrive Coober Pedy, settle into your accommodation, get race-ready. There are many dining options in the township.

Saturday: Race day! Catch the bus from out the front of the council chambers or drive approximately 30km to Kanku-Breakaways Conservation Park.

Sunday: Watch “The Story of Opal” documentary at Umoona mine and museum. Learn about the region’s history, mining, geology, landscape, underground lifestyle and Aboriginal culture. Explore dugouts and see valuable opals and fossils.

Visit a working mine to see how opals are traced and extracted, both by modern and older methods, and try ‘noodling’ for opal at the public noodling area. There are guided and self-guided tours available.

Monday:  Visit the underground churches, the Josephine’s Gallery & Kangaroo Orphanage and Crocodile Harry’s Dugout.

Take a half day flight with Wrights Air from Coober Pedy, over Anna Creek and Lake Eyre (Kati Thanda). Water is currently flowing into the lake, and the amazing birdlife will follow, so this is a trip not to be missed. Call Wrights Air to discuss flight options.

Got more time? There are day trips from Coober Pedy that take you to stunning landscapes and remote outback towns. Consider doing The Mail Run Tour—spend a day with Outback character Rowie as he delivers the mail to historic outback towns and stations—and tying this in with a flight to Lake Eyre.

The sunsets over the Kanku-Breakaways are beautiful, so you may wish to take another trip out to the park one evening and see this for yourself. Take your camera!
